Restoring the Beauty of Ancient Egypt's Capital

Tourism represents a huge component of Egypt's economy as it constitutes around 40% of Egypt's non-commodity exports with a total revenue of about EGP 41.8 billion (Thiemann, Anna, and David Butter. Out of our belief that we owe the community back, we decided to take part in improving the surroundings of some touristic areas.

As a part of our corporate social responsibility initiatives, Mobinil partnered with the Center for Development Services [CDS] to improve the quality of life of the people of Mit Rahina, the site of Memphis, the old capital of ancient Egypt. The village of Mit Rahina is located around 30 kilometers away from the Giza pyramids. Current data estimates that the village is visited by about 400 tourists every day during the summer and up to 1,000 tourists during winter. There are about 35,000 people residing in this village. Mit Rahina is also home to the colossal statues of Ramses II and temple ruins of Ptah, Hathour, and Apis.

However, Mit Rahina suffers from basic health and sanitation issues as they lack access to an adequate water supply and waste management. Alternatively, Mit Rahina residents resort to drinking well water which is usually high on salt and thus results in a number of health problems.

Mobinil partnered with Center for Development Services (CDS) in order to restore the beauty of this village and to tackle water and sanitation issues.

A number of initiatives are to take place in this village in order to improve the quality of life in such an important area.

  1. A water treatment unit, with a 30-meter deep well, was built to the highest Egyptian and international standards to provide the village with a stable supply of drinking water.
  2. 1848 tons of garbage and wastes were manually and mechanically removed from the village. Many youth volunteered their time to clean their neighborhood.
  3. A sustainable garbage and waste disposal system was established. Mobinil donated a garbage truck to transfer the collected wastes to landfills as well as dumpsters. The system has 1500 subscribers so far.
  4. Mobinil & CDS conducted 62 awareness sessions to educate the people on proper health and environment practices as well as inform them of the historical significance of the Mit Rahina area as an archeological site. 2360 people attended the sessions.
  5. Ophthalmology medical campaigns for school students. 410 students were checked for eye and vision problems, 55 students were fitted with glasses and 120 students received medications for different diagnosis.
  6. 3-day workshop to celebrate the International Environment Day with school students and the establishing of 3 recycling centers for paper, oil and rice straw.
  7. Cancer early detection campaigns resulting in the early diagnosis of 50 cases.
